    Update on Jack...

It's been a couple of months now since Jack completed the experimental Mitomycin C injection therapy for his eye sarcoid. There was no apparent reduction of the sarcoid and now, unfortunately, he has completely lost vision in the affected eye. I'm still not 100% certain the Mitomycin treatment protocol recommended by the consulting vet in England was followed properly. But... we tried. And I AM certain my vet tried his best to save the eye.

I had first promised Jack to give him until Memorial Day to show some improvement before putting him down. Then I moved the decision date to Independence Day. This morning, after one more good look at Jack's eye, I called my vet to schedule euthanasia.

Of course, Doc knows this horse well now since he had him at his clinic for 6 weeks for the treatment. He knows how mellow and friendly Jack is and was just as disappointed as me the treatment failed. Neither of us can tell for sure if he's in any real discomfort with the eye. But Jack's inability to gain and maintain weight (he's about a 3.5 now) also indicates there's stress or something else we can't find that's at work on him. I was heartsick making the call.

We chatted about Jack's condition for a few minutes and then Doc offered to take Jack and find a place for him at a private retirement farm he knows rather than put him down! Have you ever tried to hug someone through a telephone?

I'll be trailering Jack to Doc's place early next week. It will be a bittersweet day. But much better than what I had resolved myself to when I made 'the call' this morning.

Jack has a charmed life. And I have one helluva great vet. ~FH

Wow that's amazing!  I'm sorry to hear that the treatment didn't help and sorry you went through the agony of making that decision. But wow - what a turn of events!  Your vet is wonderful!  Jack is definitely charmed!

I don't even know Jack or your vet but the vet's offer to take Jack to a retirement farm was a wonderful resolution to Jack's trauma. My vet will be here in an hour--Juno is lame--and I will tell Claire, my vet, about this whole ordeal. That vet is a keeper, for sure!

    A random drive by posting...

This is a drive by posting...  I usually get my stuff posted in chat, but....

Oh boy!  We finally got over 70 today, was 75 when I looked at the thermometer...  Feels like spring is finally here....  WHAT is that???  You say it is July?  Days are getting shorter already?  LOL...

The big girls got misted with the hose, and then Suri got her mane and tail scrubbed and detangled.  She wasn't so enthusiastic about that, and was just a hairs breadth away from being a naughty girl.

I am having a glass of wine, and done for the day...  I am horse slime from head to hoof....  It was a nice day...

75? We get those sort of temps in April.  I would enjoy 75 degrees right now. Sick of the heat, but at least we have power and a/c, unlike some poor folks.

A glass of wine sounds good - think I'll join you Wink

We still have all the trim work to do and other odds and ends stuff to get completed but at least we can sit and eat like normal people

I have pictures to hang and other things to get out where I need them. I'm still not used to all the new space. Its like I'm living in a completely new house. We still need to finish up on the outside too but at least now we can take our time.
