    Need Positive Thoughts for Annapolis

I got a call from Brody, my barn manager, this morning.  He told me that Annapolis was bleeding from the nostrils and apparently had been for a while, judging by the amount of blood on his chest and legs.

He said he was eating breakfast and seemed okay, but he had called the vet.

The vet called me back and said he needed to go in to hospital so they can scope him and find out what's going on. She  called Waller Equine, who would send a trailer out to come and get him.  In fact, my vet and her assistant made the executive decision to take Star with him, to keep him calm and keep his blood pressure down.

They are on their way now  and I'm stuck at work, covering the switchboard for our receptionist while she's at lunch.

I know this may be a signal of the beginning of the end for 32 yr old Annapolis and if that's the case, I hope he goes easy.  But I'm really hoping it's just a minor thing and he makes a full and quick recovery.

Don't panic. It can be simple. Juno had a bloody nose a few times recently, which had been accompanied by a runny nose. The vet was thinking about it being a guttural pouch infection, then the bloody nose just stopped, as did the discharge. Go figure.

As dry as TX is now, he may just have a cracked sinus.

Since he was eating fine, I suspect it's nothing life-ending, but I have my fingers crossed.

Waller is Athene's breeder's vet clinic. Joey did Athene's PPE, and does the repro stuff for the breeder.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.  Annapolis has some inflammation in the nostrils, but they're not really sure of the cause.  They suspect some kind of allergic reaction resulting in a small capillary bleed. Since the bleeding had stopped by the time they scoped him, they couldn't really see where the blood had been coming from.  They're treating with steriods to get the inflamation down and he should be fine.

We had them check out Star too, since they had her to keep Annapolis company.  She's had an on again/off again nasal discharge.  They did an xray and she appears to have a couple of bad teeth that need to be pulled.  They didn't have time for a full investigation today and the vet will need to determine tomorrow if it's something she can do with the tools they have available or whether they will have to make an appointment with the equine dentist.

Sounds like they'll probably be home in a couple of days.

When Juno's nose got really snotty--before the bleeds--the vet thought she might have tooth problems since a unilateral discharge is often due to a bad tooth. Neither of the vets could detect any problems when they palpated her jaw and head, then the discharge disappeared on its own. I hope Juno's discharge is not like Star's.

I'm glad that they'll be okay.

Wow Jayne your poor head must have been spinning. So glad that Annapolis should make a complete recovery. I have a big spot in my heart for that fella. Big Smile Its almost like he made up the bloody nose so you could have Star checked out. And what luck you did, otherwise those bad teeth may have gone undetected for a long time. Sounds like you have great vets and clinics to take care of your herd. Healing thoughts are being sent to you guys from way up north. LOL.

Too late to offer my hopes that it is merely allergies/weather change/dryness. Looks as though that may be what it was.

Hopefully pulling Star's teeth will fix her discharge.

Wishing them (and you) a quick recovery.

You're probably right spragueme, Annapolis did it on purpose. I'd been putting off taking Star in because I knew he would go ballistic if left behind and her discharge came and went and never seemed really serious enough that she had to go in right then.

Anyway, Dr. Schroeder wasn't able to pull the teeth today and has made an appointment for Star on the 10th, when their equine dentist will be there.  I'm thinking we'll have to take both horses over again, for Annapolis' sake -- he really loses it when she's out of his sight.

Brody will pick them up and take them back to 2K tomorrow.
