    Joint Supplement Reccomendations

With the cold weather my senior gelding is getting a little stiff, not lame but still stiff.  What would you recommend for a joint supplement to relieve some stiffness?

    Thanks

I like cortaflex and you can call them and get a free sample (for you and your dog as well!). It's a five day supply which they claim is enough to tell if it will help your horse. Rocky is 23 and does quite well on it. He's not been stiff in a while now.

Majesty Flex Wafers.  They contain glucosamine, chondroiten, and MSM and they are in cookie form so you are sure that your horse gets all of the suppliment.  They worked wonders for my 22 year old gelding...he acts like he did when he was 8 or 9 since he's been on them.  Good luck!

My older horse (22) is on MSM and I have my 13 year old on Equinyl CM.

I have had my 18 year old mare on Farnam Platform joint supplement, mainly because she bowed a tendon, but she hasn't shown any stiffness that I've ever noticed...you wouldn't think she was older than 10 the way she moves around.  Right now I have her on Dumor Joint Supplement (Tractor Supply Company brand) which is basically the same thing with same ingredients but is $10 cheaper.

Horses are individuals and will respond differently to different products -- what works for one person will not work for another.  I would recommend that you get something with MSM in it, or even just pure MSM, which is very inexpensive.  I personally have been very happy with SmartPak's line of SmartFlex supplements and gotten a lot of bang for my buck on my limited budget.  Hyaluronic acid (often just sold as HA) is also an important chemical for joints, so you may want to include some extra HA in his diet.

Select HylarX Complete is just that - a complete joint supplement. It contains 100mg. HA plus significant amounts of all the joint supplements.

    Re: Joint Supplement Reccomendations

Having been a professional equestrian for 32 years in many disciplines from the race track to the performance arena.

I have tried most all the joint supplements, treatments and injections on the planet. I presently have a 28 year old gelding fused in the hocks under saddle...15 year old mare under saddle and a large boned Holsteiner 13 year old mare under saddle I personally own. I can suggest many supplements to owners with horses in training ..etc. But my personal choice for my horses is good quality hay, free choice salt, lots of turnout, fresh water and an all in one vitamin/mineral, antioxidant, probiotic, sand colic preventative, Omega 3 Omega 6 product call Grande, produced by Omegafields.com. It is cost affective, easy to feed, long shelf life. It has antiflamatory properties, removes free radicals, probiotics, electrolytes, biotin, zinc , for hooves, omega 3 & 6 for coat shine. I replaced corn oil, flax seed, MSM, chrodroitin sulfates, glucosamine, yogert and sand clear with no more injections.

All I can say is, it is working. No stiffness, lameness, mental problems, estrus cycle mood swings,  hooves are strong and barefoot, coat shines like new coins with dapples, no soreness after workouts, no colic. I highly recommend this product. I like to feed my horses as close to natural ingrediants as I am able. Without drugs and numerous containers of supplements for each individual horse, let alone injections. I noticed a difference in two weeks. Each horse gets 6 lbs 12% sweet feed, 10- 12 lbs timothy hay and 2 cups Grande for their daily ration. I adjust the grain/carbohydrate intake depending on the work out for that day of each individual horse.

I am not affiliated with Omega fields...I am mearly a consumer of their product.

Go confidently in the directions of your dreams.

my BM's 27+ (he was 23 for a while, so he's probably close to thirty =]) appendix is on the Equinyl GL and is doing great. There are a couple other horses at the barn on it, all doing well. It can be ordered through smartpak, which by the way is the best thing since sliced bread! But i would recommend it. The 27 year old looks...and acts... like he is 15!
