• Hunter Apparel

Hi guys, I've got a dark brown, almost black, quarter horse that I'm going to be showing in the hunters and was wondering what color coat and shirt you guys would think would go best with him. I was possibly thinking a green coat but I just don't know. He's currently sunbleached like you'd never know!! This horse that is normally practically black looks dun! It's absolutely unbelieveable! Anyways once I get him moved to his new barn, which I will be moving in January of 2012

  • Shoes?

So I'm wondering if I should shoe my 4yo Quarter Horse gelding...his feet were doing fine while he was at school being stalled yes they were a little long but I was waiting to go home to get his feet done. When he got home he was turned out and when I brought him in that night his feet were cracked horribly! I got his feet done and because of how badly they were cracked there was no way to avoid putting him at a 50 degree angle instead of a natural 55. now his leg that was the worst off is swollen

  • Re: Shoes?

Thanks it seemed to go down some but it's still a little hot. He is individually turned out right now as he's going to be going with me to my internship but he runs around and messes with the other horses over the fence. Anyway I don't know how but somehow cold hosing slipped my mind thanks. I'll start doing that and make sure I keep putting linament and wraps on him. I'm thinking I should give him off riding until the swelling goes down? I mean he gets turned out during the day

  • Re: Age to start jumping young horse

I normally START my horses over fences when they are 4 but that isn't jumping every day maybe twice a week and nothing too extreme mostly just cross rails(X) that aren't very high. Normally when I start horses out I will put the outside of the jump completely at the top and then seperate the standards so the middle is barely off the ground. This will really make them head to the center of the jump but it's not too much stress on them, they can trot over it if they want to. Once they are

  • Re: Trouble with big strides! Help!

Another thing is if he isn't bridleing up and using his back it will make his stride more bouncy. Once he starts to use his back then you can deffinately tell the difference in his stride...don't worry I'm in the same stage with my 4yo Quarter Horse. He's a big boy at about 16hh right now and I always have trouble sitting his trot...but as soon as I get him to use his back and drive his hindend up then I find it much smoother, even though it's still a big stride. I think with

  • Re: Older Mare changing barns???? HELP

She should be just fine...yes she may have a whinning fit when she's leaving but she will quickly make new friends at her new barn. I agree about making sure the new barn is nice and the staff are caring. Look around at the other horses and make sure they are all well cared for, look to see how tidy the barn is kept and stuff like that, how bedded the stalls are and how clean they are. just make sure that where ever you decided to keep your horse you wouldn't mind staying at either. Good

  • Re: Dry Cough?

Thanks guys I'm going to start watering his hay before I feed it to him as long as he'll eat it that way...He's very very picky lol. I did get a vet's ok to put him on the antibiotics for the 5 days as he had the same symptoms as all the other horses in the barn with the cold but that was back then and he still has his cough. I'm going to sweep out a spot where I put his hay so he's not eating it off of the shavings in his stall...and he's right by a door in the barn so

  • Dry Cough?

My Gelding has a Dry Cough..He's had it for about a week and a half or 2 weeks. I originally thought it was the cold that was going around our barn. So I put him on some antibiotics for the recommended 5 days 10 pills twice a day. So he went on that and took it for the full five days and he's still got the cough...No nasal discharge and it's not like he's got anything in his lungs. It's just a dry cough...I've started feeding him his hay on the ground as opposed to the hay

  • Re: Sway back in my Yearling?
Yes, remember that youngsters are the ugliest and scrawniest they'll ever be between 1 and 2. I wouldn't worry about him for awhile. We could pick him apart, conformation-wise, but why? He's just as likely to be different in a year.
I totally agree! Horse's change soooo much in their young years..Although looking at his back he maybe prone to get a sway back considering the way his back meets his withers. It's dippy there and I'd
