In the end, I opted to pass on the house -- there was very little closet space, no barn, no run-in shed, no garage, and it wasn't going to shorten my commute at all. So, there were just too many negatives even though it was really cute. I would have needed to build the run-in shed and a storage shed before I could even move in, and then eventually a barn.
That just means there's a better place waiting for you! Keep in mind that the good thing about

  • Re: I lost my confidence!

You've been through a horrific experience. The first thing you must (and probably already do) realize is that what you're feeling is a completely normal and ok reaction. Take it as slowly as you need to, riding at a walk and jog/trot until you feel inside that you're ready to try cantering. Do not let anyone push you into it before you're you feel you are ready. Eventually you'll gain your confidence back. The suggestion of having an instructor longe you on a bombproof horse is

Everyone has made excellent suggestins. The only thing which popped into my mind is to be sure the horse is wearing a snaffle bit, not a curb. You can't teach a horse lateral flexion in a curb. I know "duh" , but just had to say it.
there might be the merest bump on the front of his leg halfway down. but, it's been a week and he is still lame. he walks ok, but, very lame at a trot.
I just re-read your post before closing the screen and had another thought. If there's a slight bump, it is possible that he kicked himself. I'm not a vet, but I remember reading in a horse mag that if there is a very slight hairline fracture, there may not be any heat. If this was the case, moving

I would opt for the firmer footing in the round pen because mud is more difficult to walk in and may worsen whatever is wrong. You can stall him if you need to shelter him from bad weather, but I wouldn't stall him for extended periods, maybe just overnignt. Bute would help ease his discomfort, but be cautious in using it. It will mask the pain, which is nature's way of telling him to take it easy and not to overuse the injured part. Also, when you do get a vet to come out, the bute would

  • Re: Loose manure with work?

Scout's stools are normal as far as shape and moisture content, but he does on occasion get a little extra liquid which smears his butt a bit. Way back when he was getting 3-way hay, the problem was much worse. You could actually see as much as a cup of liquid come out with the manure and run down his leg. My vet said that since worms were ruled out, it could be due to excess undigestible fiber in the his diet. I switched him to 100% Bermuda grass hay because grass hays are more digestible than

OMG! They're almost twins! I read somewhere that Joey was played by 14 different horses. The equine makeup artist must have been pretty busy! Loved the movie. I remembered to wear waterproof mascare. Good thing, too. The barbed wire scene made me ball.
