Yesterday, I worked her over trot poles changing the length of her stride so it wouldnt get dull. Then, when she got comfortable, I had one very small x-rail and i would do figure eights with it in the middle or circles. i would just trot all and just go over it like it wasn't there. Eventually after about thirty minutes she started settling down and didn't rush into it. Thanks for everyones help. My mare in I are on our way to a new a better jumping career. I will try all of this and let

  • rushing to the jump

I have a quarter horses mare that is learning to jump.she does trot rails and small crossrails at a nice even pace, but when i raise the jump or add another jump to the grid she rushes. I have tried half halts , but she does respond. She is good with half halts on the flat. And she doesn't seem to me nervous. She moves quietly until she enters the grid. Any suggestions on some exercises that i can do to get her moving quietly all the way through?

Thanks for all your advice. I believe that she is rushing. I would like to know any specific grids that could help. It's like she gets too long and fast and unballanced after her first jump. The grid I was working with yesterday was about 4 trot poles to a crossrail then one stride pole one more stride and a small jump. She will come into the grid and be fine and after the jump she gets really fast.Any grids that might make her more comfortable jumping?

Well thanks ,I've looked at all things and I believe she isn't comfortable going over jumps just because she is just beggining to jump. I'm just trying to figure out some other things to do besides trot poles so that way she gains confedence in herself. She does trot poles wonderfully and she is comfortable with them. Once the jump gets up, she gets unconfident because of her newness to jumping. I know I need to take it slow and I am. At the same time trot poles can get boring for her

Yeah there are no colleges in ok that really have horsey stuff. I am going to school majoring in medicine and it is hard to find a medical school with horses.

  • Re: How To Get a Horse To Lighten up on the Forehand?

Another thing you could try is lots of transitions. Try to keep your transitions smooth. Lots of circle work to. I have a mare that was horrible about being on her front end when I first got her. I did alot of work going over poles. After that gets comfortable raise them up alittle bit. If you have access to cavellitties(sorry if i spelled that wrong) use those. I also did alot of hill work. WIth the hill work be sure your boy stays slow and walks using his hindend. You will get there. Just be patient
