  • Re: Weight Gain....

Have you offered her more hay? 3 flakes twice a day doesn't seem like that much for a growing youngster. [My youngsters get free choice grass mix hay.] Given the choice I'd go with the Platform feeds over Dumor. [Platform is made by Purina for Farnum.] If you want to stay with 14% protein, then try the Performance formula, otherwise the Pleasure horse (12%) would probably work just fine. Another thing to consider, would be to increase the alfalfa pellets; 1/2 qt isn't very much (1 qt

  • Re: Vitamin A

you might try Smart-pak.com and see what they have for Vitamin A supplements. You might be able to find one that has A, E and Se all in one. You might have to look in the anti-oxidant and the vitamin sections to find what you are looking for. And, they are pretty good about answering questions, so you could always e-mail them. http://www.smartpakequine.com/BrowseSupplements.aspx If I'm not mistaken, carrots are high in beta-carotene which is a pre-cursor for Vitamin A.

Oh, Jessi, I'm so terribly sorry to hear you lost your precious Radiance. She was a beautiful girl.

  • Re: Horse Head-Tossing AFTER Dental Float

Have you given thought to more chiro treatments; I imagine horses are like humans and one time doesn't always do it. If I lived closer I would be seeing my chiropractor weekly; but as its 50 miles, I see him monthly. It might only take one or two more chiro treatments to get her back in alignment.

  • Re: Mean Mare

Have you had her checked for back pain? Checked her saddle for proper fit? I had a mare that was what I called "gritchy", she was a grumpy b**** around other horses but quite sweet around people. She was definitely more sensitive to her surroundings, but just awesome under saddle. She's now owned by a teenage girl and the family loves her.

Are you sure YOUR horses are getting 3 bales of hay per day? Several years ago, when I was boarding, the BO fed my nice quality hay to several horses at the facility. when I found out about it, they said they'd replace the hay, but with their crappy hay. Shortly after this I moved my hroses. [This same BO also didn't think horses could die from colic.]

  • Re: What Kind of Concentrates Do You Feed?

I feed most of my horses Progressive Nutrition ProAdvantage grass formula, its a ration balancer, so fed at very small amounts. My senior half-Arab gelding gets 1.5#/day in summer and 1#/day plus 3# senior in winter (the quality fiber in the senior helps him maintain weight in winter - he also gets free choice grass hay). I also feed a little bit of soaked beet pulp in winter to help maintain hydration; the old guy won't eat more than 1# dry measure then soaked.

  • Re: Feed Question

Our three saddle horses have free access to a round bale in a feeder; it takes them about 10 days to 2 weeks to go through a bale (1100# bale). $140 for an 800# bale sounds a bit steep, but if they deliver and set it up where you want, then it might be worth the extra expense (the hay at $140/800# bale is running about $350/ton which seems pretty steep to me, but our hay is mostly under $100/ton). I don't imagine that the bale will last you much more than a week, especially the first one, as

  • Re: Winter feed

If you wish to try beet pulp, be sure to get the type that doesn't have molasses added back. If you are not sure, you can always rinse it and that will help to get rid of excess molasses (sugar). Beet pulp should be low in sugar as it is what is left after sugar is extracted from sugar beets; but the process isn't perfect, so not all sugar is removed. It is usually under 10%, but if the plant rushed the process there could be more sugar left. You could up your pelleted feed, as long as you
