Quality, price and recommendations from people I trust as to their experiences. I look for the best quality made products at the best price I can find for it. I found (as others said above) that quality products last longer so you get more than your $$ worth from the product, than cheap made products at dirt prices. So they are less expensive in the long run. I love looking at the catalogues though! And it's good to compare the products and prices between the various companies. Gives me a basis

I bought and installed an Equalizer hitch on my trailer/truck - it's the best! It was not that hard to install and it really stablizes the trailer. But, the hitch is HEAVY and the bars that attach are heavy - I dropped one of the bars on my foot and it broke my toe! For me, it was more than well worth the price and I would not tow without it.

Nope, not here either. I prefer using an in-person instructor - Matt Sheridan - he not only started my filly, but has taught me to "ride correctly", LOL - he can see where we are having problems and help us there on the spot! He and his wife are nice people, too! For reference materials, count me in on the Dorrance brothers, Ray Hunt and Buck camp.

How exiciting, Indeed!!! Wow, that's a great opportunity, you'll have to tell us all about it on Monday. I've seen Shelia Varian and/or her horses at various venues (mainly the Scottsdale show). I like her alot and she's extremely accomplished and breeds horses with SUBSTANCE! If I could afford one of her horses, I wouldn't hesitate in buying one. Excellent working Arabs! Can't wait for your update!

Not a book, but Chris Cox has a 2 DVD set on Handling a Young Foal . I've seen his RFDTV show on handling foals and really liked his methods.

Not sure about halter training, but for saddle starting you might go into the general natural horsemanship methods, classical methods (such as the Spanish Riding School) and starting thoroughbred race horses under saddle. Would be an interesting compare and contrast exercise . . .

Also, your local paper, if they have horse/horse equipment classifieds.
