I think some people's skin is just more prone to chafing, too. When I first started riding (Western), I had a lot of trouble with it. It definitely improved as I improved as a rider, but I would still get it every now and then, and I usually couldn't figure out why. I would recommend getting a house rabbit or two. They're a bit lower maintenance than ferrets (although I love ferrets). They litter train as easy as cats (just make sure to get them "fixed" so they don't mark their territory - that can look like bad litter habits), and they can run around the house.
