Since I am new to the Paint horse world and am just starting to go through the joyous process of sorting out transfers of ownership, gelding plus, blah blah blah, I'm wondering if this APHA issue of Solid Paint Breds has been news to anyone else. I've been looking for some shows to get Troy (my 9yr old SPB) into the ring and was bopping around the APHA site when I ran across something I didn't know. I can't show my horse in all the APHA classes because he has no spots. Now I find this fascinating

Strangles is totally treatable (as stated in the above post). It usually doesn't even much long term effect, however it can cause some respiratory scarring but this doesn't usually effect the horse's performance (I would think a high-performance horse-something on the track or 3 day eventers, something like that, may have a problem). I live in TN and about 10 yrs ago everything in my barn (about 25 horses) got strangles! ACK! It's gross. We vaccinate for it now (gee, think we learned our lesson)

I am somewhat desperately searching for open/schooling shows near middle TN. I don't mind driving a little but a couple of hours is about all I can do. Does ANYBODY know of any open/schooling shows near me????!!! I really want to get Troy in the ring. Too bad I don't show Walkers anymore...those are all the shows I can find around here! Thanks J

Haha, I live here! (Shelby-vegas, as it's sometimes called). We'll be Mule & Donkey-ing it up next week! Anybody staying at the Super 8?? (that's my job!) Hope you enjoy the show!

Yeah that thing (guess the speculum might be right) is used to keep the mouth open AND to keep the tongue out of the way and to keep the horse from movin the jaw around (therefore preventing the rasp from hitting the inside of the mouth-cheeks, roof and floor)also, most importantly for the teeth floatee-it keeps them from being bitten when they feel for points, wolf teeth, etc.

Yeah...ok...somebody needs to give them a few more stalls to clean or something. Way too much free time.

Fully...if I did that, it'd run everywhere and he'd be purple or something!

I saw an interview with John Lyons a few years ago about his horse, Zip that he used in most of his training clinics and videos. Zip had a vaccine reaction and went completely blind and he doesn't seem to have missed a beat. Lyons says that horses (and he thinks dogs and cats too)-when they have an accident-lose sight, a limb (obviously thats the dogs and cats) they don't think of it as a loss-they think, "Oh hey, today was my day to not be able to see, or whatever!" and they just move on. Gee, I
