  • Re: Critique Our Little Jump

Setting a horse up for a jump takes some practice. There's a "spot" for takeoff that you have to meet each time. That means that you have to adjust his stride, whether it's lengthening to meet the jump, or shortening if he's coming too quick. You really have to box him in with your hands legs and seat, even pressure of your aids so you're asking him to move forward. If anything, you want to keep him straight. Hope that helped a little bit.

  • Re: Horse snacks

My old pony thought it'd be funny to grab the donut I was eating and run away with it. And my apple. Without permission...Mmmmhmm. And my pizza... That pony ran away with my donut. You don't hear that sentence very often.... (:

What?? She didn't meet the jump each time... First video. Your two-point is unstable and you're using his mouth as a balancing tool. Ouch! Your spot was alright, but you are too ahead of him. You're putting weight on his forehand that he needs to jump from. This makes him behind your leg. Sit back and relax off his mouth. Second video: I understand if you want a working canter, but it needs to be collected, lengthened, controlled and more impulsion. The reason Luke hesitated was because

Even if it's not intentional, it's possible. Also, make sure you set him up because he made an awkward jump.

Yes, we stuck to cross poles less than one foot. I do have a trainer while jumping.

Oh, no. VM I am so so sorry. I lost my pony to colic. There's not much to say about this. I can't say he's in a better place because having you as his rider had to have been his heaven. But atleast he doesn't hurt anymore, and he'll always be in your heart, and in ours. I really am so sorry ):

  • Re: Coughing...

I'm thinking of a few things it could be, but you should call the vet in any case since we can't diagnose your horse. It sounds like the flu, but you said his nasal discharge is clear. When he starts to cough, does he seem anxious or upset? You said he starts coughing when he is being exercised. Could that be a heart problem? There are also respiratory problems with symptoms like you said. Equine influenza, but he doesn't have a fever or runny nose? It could be COPD, which is smart to

  • refusals.

So a new horse I'm jumping refuses a lot. He's eight years old, but he acts like a three year old. When he refuses, it's not because he is trying to be bad, but he is scared of the jumps.... Any ideas? After a few tries, he will jump it, but I'm not taking him into the showring like that. Thanks. (:

  • Re: Getting yelled at

I've put up with it a lot..my old and previous trainers all felt the need to yell. When I was little, I would suck it up and wait until I got to the car to cry. Now? WAKE UP TIME! I just shrug it off and tell myself that I will do better next time and listen to what they said, no matter how severe it was. It is frusterating, it's degrading, but it made me stronger a little bit. Not saying that it's okay, because I don't like it. But it did definitely make me a stronger rider because
