  • Re: Just bought a new horse!!

He will be competeing in NRHA events limited to only 3 year olds (Futurities). He will need that full year to learn to be a good and solid reiner. I originally rode in the hunter/jumpers and starting a horse before age 4 was crazy talk, but since I've gotton into Quarter Horses I've heard of horses started as young as 18 months(never anything hard on these guys tho, just getting the basics in so the more advanced stuff goes smoothly later on). He isn't at home yet (he's in OR and
  • Just bought a new horse!!

After selling my pinto gelding in April I have finally bought myself a new horse. Meet Starlight Tucker aka Ramone. He is a 2008 sorrel Quarter horse stud colt. He is by Starlight Shiner (by Shining Spark out of a Grays Starlight mare) and out of Smokin Tom (by Doc Tom Tucker). He is bred for reining and/or cutting. He will be attending the Uinversity of Findlay with me for the spring 2010 semester to be broke. What do you all think? His Dam, Smokin Tom His Sire, Starlight Shiner And some baby pics
  • Re: safest fly spray that works good

I have had success with Apple Cider Vinegar both as a feed additive and applied topicly to control pests. You can add it to the horses' water buckets/troughs and they will sweat it out and this helps repell bugs. You can also use garlic in a similar fashion by adding it to their feed. Vinigar can be applied topicly just like regular fly spray. As far as commercial fly sprays are concerned I found that Endure and Pyranha work the best. I also like Swat for use in ears that have been clipped.

  • Re: opinions on daily deworming

My pinto gelding that I just sold this spring was on Strongid C2X daily dewormer. I loved it and you can't beat the option to enroll your horse in PreventiCare (colic surgery reimbursment program, up $5,000 coverage). I've also looked into Continuex which also has a colic surgery program called ContinuCare. I love the daily dewormer and will use it with all my horses.

  • Hauled Wright - equine transport

Has anyone ever used them before? I am having horses moved cross country (OR to OH). Just wondering what your experiences were with them. They quoted me a wonderful price. www.hauledright.com Thanks

  • Re: preventing sunburn?

My paint had a white nose and I used regular sunscreen on it (the white didn't go to his lips). I've heard that the extended nose fly masks do help with preventing burt noses, if you can keep them on, although I do have to say the Cashel fly masks seem to stay on the longest.

  • Re: waterer

The apple cider vinegar works great. For a 40 gallon trough a cup would do the trick. You don't need a lot.

  • Re: EPM

I merely seek advise. I am no medical expert and I have not delt with an EPM horse before. He does the leg thing outside the cross ties too. Mickey has been moved to a new stable within the past year, could this cause the rings in his hooves.

  • Re: Choke - Purina Equine Senior

Thats terrible. I had similar issues with seniro feed with my POA gelding. He also was pretty much off of hay, he'd get a flake of really soft alfalfa to munch on from time to time, but he couldn't really eat it. If you want to drop pelleted feed completely (as we did with my pony) there are many different options out there. Here is what my little beasty would get: AM Meal 3 lbs Alfalfa-Timothy hay cubes soaked over night ( http://www.ontariodehy.com/tab02-03.htm ) 1 lbs Beet Pulp soaked
