Our 1st horse came to us well trained. Our new horse however, is not. We have difficulty riding him, he very willingly will follow horse #1 anywhere but doesn't want to go on his own. so I decided we would do round pen work for a while. Well, he must have learned (very well) the hook on/latch on concept, he will follow me anywhere and when I try to stand toward his rear he turns to face me. we begin to go in tiny circles. I've tried with and without a lunge line and just can't get him to go forward. I did put him on a lead line and walked and trotted him around thinking he would get the idea, but he didn't. Can anyone help?

new at this

hi all this looks like a great place for me. I can ask all the dumb questions I want and no one will make me feel stupid I hope.

I do not own a horse as of yet. But back in the fall some freinds and I took a trip to the Mountains and went trail riding. That was it I have been bitten by the horse bug. I have loved them since I was a kid and since we live on a farm. See no reason not to buy one.

The only thing is I am 42 years old and overweight i weigh 200lbs. My question is should I lose weight before I start riding lessons or start lessons now?

I just wanted to make sure that I had everything I need for a show. I'm not experienced in showing. I started riding at 14 and was in 1 w/t equiation show and I wasn't prepared even back then. Now I'm starting again and want to make sure that I have everything when the season starts so I'm not scrambling around like a chicken without a head.

I have:

Show Jacket (black)

tan breeches

show shirt (white with pink pinstripes and the velcro collar)

black paddock boots

black half chaps

helmet (regular troxel schooling)

jumping crop

I know I need to get:

field boots

stock pin

gloves (i always lose one)

hair net

spurs

Is that all that I am missing? I've tried to find articles online but they have been saying that "if it is just a schooling show". I don't know if it is a schoolinng show or not. I will be renting a school horse (because the show is at my local barn) but everyone is always in all proper clothes with the velvet helmet and everything. It's one of those barns that, because you are not a 7 year old girl, you are expected to know everything and if you don't then you have no bussiness riding. No, I don't like being at this barn but it is the closest show barn and I need the show experience becuase I want to go out for the college equestrian team.

Thanks for the help.

Re: How to gain dominance

The horse that I ride for my Saturday lessons, Major (the one for my avatar), likes to bump me with his head after I dismount.
yup, I'm bitten by the "horse bug," too! I am a 45-year old female university student who has signed up for a credit course in horseback riding (pleeeeese don't tell my parents who will pay my $400 "grocery bill" it's really the additional horse-course fee!!). I've had a checkered history with all things equine (we all have our stories! ;) ); despite the past, I am determined to learn what I can about horses and succeed this time. So far, I've bought grooming tools, a hardhat, and now am trying to get in shape to ride. I have access to a well-equipped gym; what sorts of exercises/workouts would make me a better rider?

Sorry if this all sounds dorky; this is my first post. I'd rather flounder online than flop in the saddle!

Re: new adult rider

HELLO EVERYONE!!

After reading secretly reading this web site for a few weeks, I decided to step forward. At first I was a little nervous not being as educated as I think I should be about horses. And possibly being the "stupid question" person made me cautious. I found out this sight is great..so here I go. I am a brand new horse owner. Years ago I took English riding lessons and did the old $15/hour horse riding stables. (which by the way is now $30/hour) I have always loved horses..but just couldnt afford and didnt know how to go about it. As Suzlaub said..this year I got the horse bug and got started. I educated myself as well as I could, read every book out (including Horses For Dummies) even bought my Parelli discs..went to a stable that was renting stalls, and picked everyones brain there. I knew what I needed,,a well broke, 7-8 year old horse..Well..to make a very long story short,,,I know own a 3 1/2 year old Clydesdale/Shire. I broke all the rules I set up for myself. This has always been my dream horse.. and I knew that once I purchased a horse it would be a life long buddy( I'm not one to buy and sell) He is a total gentleman..Western broke,,started on English and has been on the trail quite a bit. But guess who hasnt?? ME!! It will be a long rode..I watched "experienced" people with him..and he does everything he was promised he would do when sold to me. He is good for me, he just knows, as a All horses do..that sometimes I am a little intimidated by his size and me being so green..he plays on it. Soooooo,,,to try to end my forever storey...I will start with my first, of I'm sure many, questions..I am looking into buying a saddle for him(just got him 2 weeks ago) He is 16.1 H now..and I know has a little more to grow. Any reccomendation on a saddle that could temporarily accomodate him? As I am not sure if it will be his "forever saddle" because he is still growing,,yet comfort is very important for my horse...as we all know..ifthe saddle is no good..the ride will be no good,,Also..has anyone heard of a "flex saddle" and if so, do you find them to work for a still growing horse?

new adult rider

Hi Guys!

I've been completely bitten by the horse bug! I started riding at the beginning of September, and am consumed by it! I'm learning English and would eventually like to compete in Dressage. I'm grooming pretty well, learning to tack, and can steer a little better each time I'm on the horse. I'm currently learning to post the trot.....whew....remember when you were learning to drive a car and nothing felt right? I'm having trouble finding the rythmn of the trot.I think one of the problems is I'm having to think about breathing, posture, position all at once. I've basically been training for 4weeks.For the first 2 weeks, I rode once a week. Lately, I've been trying to get in 2 sessions a week.Does anyone care to share their experiences about being a beginning adult rider? It would be wonderful to find some common ground with other adults who are discovering this whole new world. By the way, I've just turned 40 in May and discovered my new passion!
