We have a boil water order in effect in our town. They haven't released any details. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Any advice is welcome.

Barns using Facebook

I was wondering if any barns are using Facebook as a way of attracting boarders and riders. If so, what are you doing and how successful has it been? As everyone knows, the economy is hurting just about everyone and the barn where I ride is no different. My barn owner was asking me about getting on Facebook today, but I really couldn't tell her much about using it for business purposes. Any information or insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Well i have a pony who hates being caught. She also hates it when her pasture buddies leave her. Here are some things that i have used that work on her:

1. If her pasture buddies are taken out it makes her easier to catch because she wants to be with them.

2. I know you said treats dont work for you, and that is what happened with Brandi, but when i gave her buddy a treat she wanted to have one too.

3. *THIS WORKS BEST FOR ME* i unclip the halter from the lead rope and put down the halter. Next i walk up to her and put the leadrope around her neck. Now i lead her over to where the halter is and i put it on her. Then i clip on the lead rope and take it off her neck.

Shocking results with vacuum- help!

We just purchased a Metro Vac n' Blo for use on our 4 pasture ornaments. We live in an area with VERY low humidity, and the vacuum builds up loads of static and shocks the horses. Does anyone have any safe, creative ways to redirect the static? The MetroVacWorld site didn't have any solutions. The nozzle and hose are plastic, body of vac is metal. Thanks!

Monthly cost of keeping a horse

I'm thinking of buying a horse, but don't know what to expect in terms of what the monthly cost is. I know that boarding and feeding will be the most expensive part. Then there's the shoeing every 6 weeks, the yearly shots (Coggins and what else?), insurance, vet bills if he gets sick, and what else? What's the average cost of these? I know all these things will vary depending on where you're located. I'm located in North Texas (DFW).

I'm thinking it will cost at least $1000/month. I realize this doesn't cover any extra bills - vet bills if he gets sick. Am I missing anything? What else should I consider? How did you decide to take the plunge? Did you have any surprises - financially or otherwise?

How to clean your grooming bag

I have an Ariat Carry Bag that I keep my grooming tools in. Naturally, it's pretty dirty and dusty all over. I'd like to clean it but don't know how. I emailed Ariat to ask about cleaning it and they said that I should spot clean it. They specifically said that it's not recommended to wash it in the washing machine. Has anyone tried to wash it on the gentlest cycle and gotten good results? It would be a lot easier to do that than to spot clean it, but I don't want to ruin it either. Please help. Thanks.

Any suggestions for fun exercises you can do in a small ring? I have been doing circles, changes of gait, figures and have run out of inspiration. (My horse is recovering from a hip problem and needs to stay away from anything too "bendy" and poles/jumps for a little while; we're also limited to walk/trot for now.)

I think it's great we have a place to post where we all know the majority of us are "50 Plus"! But the youngsters are very smart and willing to share what they know, I've learned so much since I found this forum a couple of years ago. I have been around horses since I was very young, but never in a formal training/barn situation. I've either boarded my horses at a small stable or had them at my house. This stable where I'm at now is huge, 140 horses (guess). If I need advice about something I'm unsure of, it's the young people I seek out. Most have had years of formal training by trainers and are more than willing to share with an old folk like me!
