If you can afford them, I have seen "hock socks" that are supposed to be for that purpose. It's common for horses to get sores on the joints from laying down and getting up. Two of mine had just small spots on their hocks that finally, after everything I tried to do, turned into callus...

If you do get hock boots/socks - if there is an active sore put goop (techie term) on it and wrap with soft cotton before putting the boot on. It may rub otherwise. Once it's healed then go with the boot alone.
